Now it is finally here – the VW Karmann Ghia convertible. During his lifetime, the WIKING founder received letters from collectors with striking regularity, requesting that he offer the Karmann Ghia as a duo. However, even a model draft created by his own toolmaker Gruttke failed to melt Fritz Peltzer’s heart. Now, WIKING has revamped the body – creating a genuine classic from historical moulds that carries the WIKING spirit of master model maker Alfred Kedzierski. Every detail reflects the style of the production models of the time. The coupé and the convertible version of the Karmann Ghia equally rank among the most elegant classics ever produced in German automotive history. Marrying Italian design with German high-volume technology, they both came to be style icons of the post-war years. The idea behind these models was quickly described as creating a sporty elegant body based on the Beetle. 1953 witnessed the crucial collaboration with the designers of Italian body maker Carrozzeria Ghia in Turin. Thanks to the key involvement of Luigi Segre, the partnership produced a prototype that joined Beetle technology with a body of extraordinary elegance. Initially introduced as a coupé in 1955, the Karmann Ghia type 14 was launched as a convertible two years later and quickly became exceedingly popular.
