It was the fourth Unimog WIKING presented at the time - following the 411, the unglazed “frog eye”, and the S 404. And, since that time, the former Gaggenau all-wheel drive vehicle has enjoyed tremendous popularity as the medium-weight Unimog series from Mercedes-Benz. Now it drives up as a sweeper with a removable front sweeper broom attachment and a water tank on the flatbed – genuinely elevating the Unimog chronology. Its production numbers alone are impressive: during the time it was produced from 1963 to 1989, no fewer than 37,069 units of the U 406 rolled off the production lines at the Mercedes-Benz production plant in Gaggenau. This number lets the Unimog U 406 rank among the Unimog model series with the longest and most successful production record. Even if they had wanted to - which they never did - building yards could not do without the Unimog: there simply was no other vehicle more suitable for road maintenance and winter service. This time, the Unimog U 406 – first presented by WIKING in 1967 – is released as a service vehicle that performed its duties with great reliability well into the nineties.
