With the Opel Rekord P1, the German middle class embarked on a new era in 1957. Taking the place of the Opel Olympia Rekord, it personified the Economic Miracle’s confident expedition to new shores and brought a flare of American style to European roads. The “P” in its model designation stood for Panorama - and this convertible, which was rare at the time, certainly lived up to this moniker. The open-top original of the WIKING model was implemented as a “customised” vehicle, i.e. as a custom-made interpretation of the Opel P1 that was tailored to the individual requests of the customer, predominantly by skilled body manufacturers.
