Introduced in 1963, the Rekord A represented Opel’s first major milestone in the development of its successful mid-range series. Following the Rekord models P1 and P2, which were strongly influenced by American design, the Rekord A presented itself with distinctly more modern, clearer and more mature features. It marked the transition from the playful style of the fifties to a more objective design language, which came to be typical of the sixties and is especially noticeable in the two-colour contrasting colour design with contrasting roof. The WIKING model attests to this epochal change, as the body of the Rekord original was completely redeveloped. Clear lines and the exclusion of panoramic windows gave the car a timeless appearance. Despite its more matter-of-fact design, the Rekord A remained representative and self-confident - a car equally well suited for families, business people, and up-and-coming middle classes. Opel thus met exactly the taste of a generation that valued solidity, comfort, and modernity.
