In the post-war decades, state police authorities relied almost exclusively on the vehicles made by the Wolfsburg auto maker. Even the legendary VW 181, the former Bundeswehr bucket car, found its way into the police fleets operating in many federal states. Especially where the locations required certain off-road capabilities, resulting in the rugged bucket car’s long years of service - at times well into the nineties - even though it was not capable of all-wheel driving. WIKING miniaturised the VW 181 with the two-tone design that was typical of those years, which is particularly noticeable when the separately designed doors are viewed from the side. When the VW 181 was presented at the 1969 IAA auto show, its initial mission as a vehicle was of a purely military nature. After the attempt of European countries to build a Jeep counterpart failed in the sixties and, worse yet, the production of the DKW Munga ran out, Germany’s armed forces came under pressure. VW took action, and placed the type 181 on a platform frame, and the VW Beetle contributed the engine.
