This model marked the beginning of Ford's passenger car construction in post-war Germany. While the traces of the Cologne bombing nights were still visible everywhere, the Ford Taunus G73A, affectionately known as the “Humpback Taunus”, rolled off the assembly lines in the production halls in Niehl. Its history began as early as 1939, when it took the place of the Ford Eifel, but the World War II stopped civilian production. It was not until 1948 that production in the cathedral city resumed, making the G73A the first major passenger car of the post-war period for Ford Germany. In this period characterised by scarcity and reconstruction, it became a symbol that stood for hard-earned new prosperity and the dream of individual mobility. From a technical standpoint, the car remained conservative, which was actually beneficial in the late forties: The tried-and-tested technology was easy to service. Its signature humpy bonnet concealed an L-head four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1.2 litres and delivering roughly 34 hp. While not exactly turning the Taunus into a race car, the engine served as a reliable companion on the roads of the young Federal Republic, which commonly still showed damage. WIKING took their cues from the Taunus model year 1949/50, which had already been treated to some upgraded features. All the same, it could not conceal its kinship with the pre-war “Humpback Taunus” – which is why it retained the name.
