The story behind the first Audi 100 – known as the C1 for short – tells the tale of a car that to this day is viewed as a true feat of automotive engineering. No wonder that WIKING zeroed in on the first limousine from Ingolstadt early on and has miniaturised it 90 times since - in keeping with its status. When the Audi brand was still under the strict thumb of Volkswagen, it was chief engineer Ludwig Kraus who resisted the omnipotence of the VW Beetle and secretly developed a modern mid-size car. When the board of VW saw the finished concept, their initial resistance was quickly broken – and the C1 was officially unveiled in 1968. In fact, the Audi 100 came to be the brand's largest vehicle up until that point and a symbol of new beginnings. Emanating an elegant design and a focus on comfort, it had its finger on the pulse of the times. Audi's advantage over the competition was to be a decisive one, as their front-wheel drive treated passengers to an unprecedented amount of space in the interior. Their success confirmed that this design initiative was the right approach: By the end of production in 1976, over 800,000 units had been sold – many of them decked out in a contemporary bicolour design with a red body and contrasting black roof.
